So yesterday we had Laity Sunday at our church. It was kind of nice not having to do a whole lot. Laity did all the parts of the worship service. The sermon was given by a group of people who took a mission trip to Lake Charles, LA last year and they showed us pictures and told us about their trip. For the first time in a long time I was able to sit with my family through the entire service. The scripture reading was Matthew 25: 31-46, and in this reading the word "naked" appears four times. Each time the word "naked" was spoken I could hear my eight-year-old son let out a little giggle. It was a bit humorous at the time, I think mostly because I remember doing the same thing when I was eight years old. Humor, aside, I was actually sort of pleased by this because I now have tangible evidence that he was actually listening during the service!
On another note, this got me to thinking about other times I've had perhaps inappropriate chuckles in church. These usually have to do with hymns.
One of my favorite hymns is "Lead On, O King Eternal." A few years ago I was standing next to another Associate Pastor at the congregation I was serving, and as we sang this song I heard him say "Lead on o kinky turtle..." I know it's highly inappropriate, but I couldn't help but chuckle. To this day I cannot sing that song with a straight face.
